6 people were hospitalized after taxis jumped from the curb in New York, NYPD reported

The crash happened around 1pm on 1186 Broadway, near 29th Street, a few blocks from the Empire State Building.

The incident “appears to be an incident”, but investigators will make that decision, said NYPD Deputy Chief of Staff John Chell of the Bureau of Patrol Services.

According to Chel, the video from the accident shows that the taxi made a left turn on Broadway and collided with a cyclist who was heading south on Broadway. The taxi then slowed, turned left and jumped over the sidewalk, he added.

The taxi appears to have accelerated before hitting two women and pressing them against the wall of the building, the video shows, according to Chel.

“When that happened, a remarkable scene happened,” Chel said. “About 15-20 New Yorkers tried to take the taxi from these women.”

The taxi driver is one of six people transported to the hospital, Chel said, although he did not specify the driver’s condition.
