Welcome to day five coverage from Wimbledon as we approach the midway point of the tournament and the number of players still in the event continues to dwindle.
It was another dramatic day on Thursday as Katie Boulter claimed the biggest win of her career when she beat Karolina Pliskova. Boulter, ranked 118th in the world, eliminated the sixth-seeded Czech 3-6 7-6(4) 6-4 and said in her on-court interview that her grandmother had died earlier this week, dedicating the win to her.
“Her favorite tournament was Wimbledon,” Boulter told reporters. “That’s why this is special to me. She would watch every single game that was on TV. It’s been a tough few days for sure. I tried to sort of get my emotions out and deal with the situation, try and keep my head on tennis.
“I was lucky because my grandfather was able to come over from Leicester so we could keep him company and still support him at the same time.”
Boulter, who reached the third round of a Grand Slam for the first time, will face France’s Harmony Tan. Elsewhere, Rafael Nadal and Coco Gauff have booked their places in the third round and look set for a deep entry into the tournament.
Today, the focus will return to world No. 1 Novak Djokovic, who takes on his Serbian compatriot Miomir Kecmanovic. Britain’s Heather Watson opens play on Center Court in a winning match against Kaya Yuvan on Court #1.
“I’m pretty relaxed about it right now,” Watson said. “I’ve been here before. I just take it step by step, game by game. “I feel like as I’ve gotten older, I’ve been on the tour for many years now, my highs aren’t as high, but my lows aren’t as low.”
