Vancouver Canucks extend Brock Boeser’s contract

The Vancouver Canucks announced Friday that the team has agreed to a three-year contract extension with winger Brock Boeser worth $6.65 million per season. The contract is worth a total of $19.95 million and will take him into unrestricted free agency in 2025. According to CapFriendly, Boeser will have a limited no-trade clause in 2024-25, allowing him to name a 10-team roster without trade.

General manager Patrick Alvin issued the following statement about Boeser’s signing:

We are very happy to have worked out a new deal for Brock. He is a very talented player and has been an efficient goalscorer throughout his career. We look forward to seeing his game evolve in the coming years. Now that his contract is up for three seasons, Brock can shift his full focus to on-ice performance.

The 25-year-old first-round pick has cemented a spot in Vancouver’s top 6 as he looks to become a major scoring opportunity for them for years to come. However, Boeser’s production took a step back in 2021-22, registering 23 goals and 23 goals for just 46 points in 71 games. He has yet to rematch his career high of 29 goals set in his rookie season in 2017-18. It was this lack of scoring development that led the Canucks to explore the possibility of trading him, mainly because Boeser was set to receive a qualifying offer worth $7.5 million. After Boeser was able to settle on a cheaper hit, however, a reunion between the two sides became a possibility.

Boeser’s production has increased dramatically since Bruce Boudreau took over behind the bench, but that’s a good sign for optimistic Canucks fans. If Boudreau’s system can help him regain the playmaking ability that previously made him an effective scorer, he could suddenly become a solid primary scoring option in Vancouver. If not, the team will likely have to settle on him as a secondary scoring option to be a contender in the Western Conference. However, with the team willing to commit over $6.5 million per season to an already tight salary cap situation, they are clearly counting on Boeser hitting his cap.
