A severe thunderstorm watch has been issued; strong winds, nickel size hail possible

In addition to the city, the watch includes St. Joseph Island as well as some areas north of the city

With a cold front moving into the area, Environment Canada has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for the Sault region as a line of thunderstorms approaches.

“Conditions are favorable for the development of severe thunderstorms that may produce strong wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain,” Environment Canada said in a statement.

Wind gusts up to 90 km/h and nickel hail with locally heavy rainfall are also possible.

The watch has been issued for areas including:

  • Sault Ste. Marie – St. Joseph Island
  • Searchmont – Montreal River Harbor – Batchawana Bay

Meanwhile, a Severe Thunderstorm Warning has been issued for the Agawa Park and Lake Superior area.
