Voters do not want President Biden or former President Trump on the ballot in 2024, according to a new Harvard Center for American Policy Studies and Harris Poll.
News Movement: A majority of people polled in late June dismissed the possibility of a rematch between Biden and Trump in the next presidential election, but the survey found Trump on stronger ground with his base.
Details: Seven in 10 people polled said Biden should not run for a second term.
- 45% say Biden is a bad president, while 30% say he’s too old.
- A quarter of people said it was time for a change.
Between the lines: Asked whether Biden is “mentally fit to serve as president of the United States or have doubts about his fitness for the job,” 60 percent of respondents said they had doubts about Biden’s fitness, including nine in 10 Republicans polled and more than a quarter of Democrats polled.
- In the potential Democratic primary, 30% of Democrats polled said they would support Biden. Vice President Kamala Harris is at 18 percent and Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders is at 8 percent.
By the numbers: Six in 10 voters say they don’t want Trump to run again.
- One in three respondents said they would divide America.
- 36% said he was inconsistent, while 30% said Trump was responsible for the Capitol riot on January 6, 2021.
Yes, but: The poll shows Trump is the clear favorite among GOP primary voters among other potential Republican candidates.
- Among Republicans polled, 56% say they would vote for Trump in the primary.
- Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis was the next most popular choice among GOP voters at 16 percent. Former Vice President Mike Pence received 7%.
Methodology: This survey was conducted online from June 28-29 and included 1,308 registered voters.
