Thirty-five people were shot, five fatally, during a bloody holiday weekend in Chicago.
A 24-year-old woman was killed Friday night during a shootout between two men in the Chinatown area of the city, with one of the shooters and two others wounded in the incident, according to a report from ABC 7. The woman was hit in the torso and was taken to Stroger Hospital, but died from her injuries, police say.
Four more people were injured Friday night in West Garfield Park when a man walking down the road opened fire on the group, with a 25-year-old man struck in the back and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was described in serious condition. The three other victims were also taken to hospital but are in good condition.
A 30-year-old man was fatally shot in the head on the city’s south side early Saturday, and police said no suspects were in custody. A 90-year-old man was hospitalized later Saturday after suffering a gunshot wound to the abdomen, with Mount Sinai Hospital listing him in critical condition. The police said they spoke with a person of interest in the case.

The shooting came the same day Chicago Mayor Laurie Lightfoot held a press conference to express his appreciation for the city’s police officers.
“We need to remember every day every single clock, our brave men and women of the Chicago Police Department are out there literally putting their lives on the line for our safety,” Mayor Lori Lightfoot said during a press conference Friday, reminding residents to “say thank you ” of the officers.
Chicago Police Chief (CPD) David Brown joined Lightfoot in saying the July 4th holiday will be a tough weekend for police.
“There is no reason why everyone can’t enjoy the celebration and the safety of every event. Parents, please, please, know where your children are,” he said. “Don’t leave it up to the government to parent your children. We need you parents please to help us make sure your young people are safe.’

Two people were injured in a shooting Saturday night on the city’s west side, with one person shot in the leg and transported to Stroger Hospital in serious condition. A woman was also wounded in the leg during the shooting and was reported to be in good condition at the hospital. Police said there are no suspects in the case.
A 24-year-old man was fatally shot early Sunday and two others were wounded when a gunman opened fire on a crowd gathered in a backyard in the city’s south. Police say the man was shot multiple times in the body and pronounced dead at the scene, while a 24-year-old woman and a 30-year-old woman were also shot multiple times and transported to a hospital. The 24-year-old woman is stable and the 30-year-old is in good condition. There are no suspects in custody.
The backyard shooting was part of a particularly violent eight-hour stretch in the city in which 16 people were shot, two fatally.

A 38-year-old man was taken to the University of Chicago Hospital on Sunday after he was shot multiple times while trying to confront someone who was breaking into his car. He was listed in serious condition. A few hours earlier, another man was shot during a dispute over a traffic accident in the south of the city. The 45-year-old man’s vehicle was struck by another vehicle, prompting the man to approach the vehicle in an attempt to exchange information. An argument soon ensued and the driver of the striking vehicle shot the man in the neck, prompting him to be transported to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn and listed in good condition. Police have not arrested a suspect.

Around the same time, a man was grazed in the head by a bullet near the scene of a shooting in Chinatown on Friday, with the man telling police he heard people arguing nearby before gunfire erupted. The 18-year-old man was taken to Stroger Hospital and is in good condition. Police do not have a suspect in custody.
