Senior figures in the Tory backbench Committee of 1922 could change the rules as early as today to allow another vote of confidence in Boris Johnson, The Telegraph understands.
The executive, which decides on requirements for how Tory leadership challenges are to be met, meets at 4pm on Wednesday in parliament for a regular meeting.
Three members of the 1922 executive told The Telegraph on Wednesday that a decision to open Johnson up to another confidence vote was possible.
The prime minister is protected from another challenge for a year from when he won the Tory MPs’ vote last month under current rules, but that could be changed by the 1922 executive.
Whether that will happen is a matter of debate among executive members, likely to take place behind closed doors at Wednesday’s meeting.
Critics of the move fear it will set a bad precedent, while supporters believe it will reflect the wider will of the party.
Other moves could theoretically be made, such as Sir Graham Brady, the chairman of the 1922 Committee, being begged by 1922 colleagues to tell Mr Johnson that he had lost the confidence of the party.
