Toronto’s sprinklers and sprinklers are working overtime as June’s dry season continues to wreak havoc on residents. The grass looks more like straw these days, leaving Torontonians to wonder – where has all the rain gone?

June was an unusually dry month for the City of Toronto, reaching just 56.5 percent of normal precipitation for the month. As a result, residents notice that their once green and lush grass has turned yellow with a straw-like texture.
If you’re looking for rain, just travel north and east of Toronto. Saguenay experienced its wettest June on record with rainfall accumulations that could be measured in centimeters (239 mm). But even closer to Toronto, the city of Montreal came close to nearly 200 percent of its monthly normal with 169.4 mm of rain, blowing just 40.4 mm Toronto out of the water – pun intended.
Both Montreal and Toronto average about the same amount of rainfall in June (87 mm and 71.5 mm respectively), so why such a big difference this time?
Remember that wet and active weather moves along boundaries, often where warm and cold air meet. However, in June, a powerful US heat dome sat comfortably to the east, occasionally pointing its ridge toward Canada.

The result was steady, summer-like warmth in Windsor and Toronto, but also a northward shift of the active weather boundary. The ridge often pushed rainy and stormy weather north into eastern Ontario and southern Quebec, leaving southern Ontario high and dry.
Sprinklers and watering hoses are working overtime to combat dry conditions in Toronto through June, although better news is around the corner. The July pattern may bring more chances of rainfall compared to June.
As the US heat dome shifts west, active weather may have more opportunities to sink south into southern Ontario. July sees brief summer heat, broken by frequent cold fronts, resulting in comfortable conditions for most of the month.
