Boris Johnson and Carrie throw a lavish party at Checkers

Boris Johnson wants to stay so he and his wife Carrie can have a big wedding celebration at Checkers, Tory sources claim.

The couple tied the knot with just a few guests at Westminster Cathedral in May last year.

But two sources told The Mirror that the couple want to go ahead with the party and invite as many friends and family as possible as Covid restrictions have now been lifted.

The Checkers do, scheduled for July 30, is expected to be bigger and more lavish than the small wedding.

But the prime minister’s allies have pushed back and hinted that Boris Johnson wants to stay on as caretaker prime minister because it makes sense for the country as a new leader is found.

However, if Boris is forced to leave earlier than the autumn, he will be forced to cancel the lavish show.

One Tory source said: “It is unbelievable that even after all the criticism Johnson has faced about integrity and honesty, one of the reasons he is staying is to host his wedding party at Checkers.

“This is a national treasure, not his personal home. The Johnsons should do the decent thing and find another place.

“And Boris should do the decent thing and leave Number 10 immediately.” A second insider added: “It’s stupid if it goes ahead.”

But a spokesman told Metro.co.uk: “The Prime Minister has a strong sense of duty and will continue to serve his country until a new leader is elected to continue his duties to the public.”

Boris Johnson confirmed today that he will step down as leader of the Conservative Party after a tumultuous few days that have rocked the Tory party.

MPs such as Grant Shapps, Priti Patel and Brandon Lewis, who were staunch supporters of the prime minister during his tenure, turned against him and advised him to step down.

The UK is now on course for its fourth prime minister in just six years and whoever takes over will have to work to ease the cost of living crisis while maintaining international security on the world stage following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
