Four impaired drivers in three days are part of ‘disturbing trend’: RCMP

A Brandon woman is facing charges after she allegedly drove while impaired while her two young children were in the car, rolling it over in the process.

RCMP say it happened Wednesday around 9:45 p.m. when they received a call about a single vehicle rollover west of Brandon on Richmond Avenue West near Road 66. Reports indicate two children under the age of five were in the car .

When officers arrived at the scene, they found a heavily damaged car on the northbound side of the road. The windshield was smashed and the roof collapsed. A 29-year-old woman and her two daughters, ages 5 years and 11 months, were rescued from the vehicle and taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The woman was tested at a hospital and RCMP said she was found to be impaired. She was arrested for impaired operation of a vehicle over .08 and impaired operation causing bodily injury. Her ID was confiscated and she was released from custody with a court date.

RCMP say this is part of a larger, disturbing trend in southwestern Manitoba, with 4 similar incidents occurring in the past few days. Officers were patrolling Highway 340 in the RM of Cornwallis in the early morning hours of July 3rd when an eastbound vehicle activated its high beams as it passed the police car. A 57-year-old man from Sprucewoods, Man. was arrested and faces charges of assault.

On July 5, Mounties say two men – ages 43 and 26, both from Brandon – were pulled over during check stops at various locations by Blue Hills RCMP. Both men have been tested and cautioned. Their cars were impounded for three days and their licenses were confiscated for 72 hours.

All charges are yet to be proven in court. The investigation continues.
