Firefighters were called to a fire at an abandoned three-story apartment building near White Avenue in Edmonton Saturday morning.
A spokesperson for Edmonton Fire and Rescue told Global News that someone called 911 at 3:42 a.m. about a fire in the area of 83 Avenue and 108 Street. They said crews arrived at the scene six minutes later.
Around 8 a.m., Global 1’s news helicopter captured footage of firefighters using ladders to spray water on the roof.

“Crews, when they first went up, saw heavy flames coming from the top of the third floor,” said District Superintendent Mike Loeffler.

EFRS said no one was injured.
“There was nobody in the building,” Loeffler said. “This building was boarded up and abandoned.”
He added that older, unoccupied buildings can be particularly dangerous for firefighters.
“It’s not safe for us,” Loeffler said. “These old buildings, especially when they’re abandoned, they’re not taken care of … they’re structurally unsafe.
“There could be holes in the floor, holes in the walls.”
He noted that firefighters initially battled the fire inside, but “had to get out because of the heat and the flames.”

The fire department said investigators remained at the scene late Saturday morning, but had not yet released details on the cause or extent of the damage.
