GTA 6 must exceed players’ expectations, admits Rockstar

It’s been almost a decade since GTA 5 and developer Rockstar is probably starting to feel the pinch. The studio – which admitted this week that it was effectively abandoning Red Dead Online – said it understood “more than ever the need to exceed player expectations and to [GTA 6] to be the best it can be”.

To be honest, it was not the best period for the giant company. Disgruntled Red Dead Online fans are planning an in-game funeral for the multiplayer mode as Rockstar diverts resources elsewhere. Meanwhile, last year’s GTA Trilogy was panned, and while it’s improved over the past few months, it’s still not as good as it could and should be.

All of this, of course, serves as a backdrop to the continued reliance on GTA 5. While the recent PS5 port of the 2013 open-world classic is excellent, it’s starting to show its age and a sequel is long overdue. The good news is that the company is finally listening to fan feedback about GTA Online and will be rolling out a number of much-needed improvements later this summer.

But the jury is still out on GTA 6. Speculation is that it will be a very different experience than what longtime fans have come to expect, with an emphasis on multiplayer and online connectivity. It will be fascinating to see what the company comes up with – especially when you consider that a number of high-profile veterans have since moved on to a new location.
