Thor: Love and Thunder earned $302 million in its opening weekend at the global box office and secured a victory worthy of the gods.
As reported by Variety , Thor: Love and Thunder brought in $143 million in North America and another $159 million internationally.
Although the MCU’s latest film debuted just short of domestic estimates of $150 million, it still performed very well, earning more than Thor: Ragnarok’s $123 million in 2017. It also ranks just behind Jurassic world: Dominion with $145M and Madness’ $185M multiverse Doctor Strange for 2022’s biggest opening weekend.
Thor: Love and Thunder cost $250 million to produce, and Marvel spent an estimated $100 million promoting it, so those numbers should be very promising for the studio. Finally, Thor: Love and Thunder had the 12th best opening of all MCU films, of which there were 28 before it.
In our review of Thor: Love and Thunder, we said it was “held back by a slick plot and poor handling of supporting characters, but succeeds as the MCU’s first romantic comedy thanks to the chemistry between Chris Hemsworth and Natalie Portman.”
Minions: The Rise of Gru took second place, earning $45.5 million in its second weekend. As it stands, the fifth entry in the Despicable Me franchise has grossed $210 million domestically and $399.8 million worldwide.
Top Gun: Maverick came in third, adding another $15.5 million to its total in its seventh weekend of release. The second Top Gun film earned $597.4 million domestically and over $1.18 billion worldwide.
Elvis took fourth place with $11 million, down 40% from its opening weekend. Elvis has grossed $91.1 million in North America so far.
Rounding out the top five was Jurassic World: Dominion with $8.4 million in domestic ticket sales. That was enough to allow the latest Jurassic film to cross the $350 million mark in North America.
