OAKLAND, Calif. (KGO) — Crews have fully contained a massive wildfire in West Oakland that closed both directions of I-880 due to smoke Monday, officials said.
The fire started around 10.20am on the corner of Wood St. and West Grand Ave.
Several cars and vans were burning under the freeway, officials confirmed.
“This is very dangerous for the public as well as our firefighters. Multiple explosions from pressurized cylinders here on scene that could at any moment take the life of one of our firefighters,” said Oakland Fire Chief Reginald Freeman.
“And we’ve been to this place a few times. And on top of that, breathing in very, very dangerous smoke.”
A traffic advisory was issued on Interstate 880 following the fire, where all lanes were closed due to smoke, causing major delays for commuters.
