New York launches nuclear preparedness program PSA – NBC New York

New York launched its latest PSA on Monday, focusing on preparing for a possible nuclear attack.

“Although the probability of a nuclear weapons incident in/near New York City is very low, it is important that New Yorkers know the steps to stay safe,” the New York City Department of Emergency Management said in its press release.

The brief public announcement identified three steps New Yorkers can take “as threats continue to evolve.”

“So there was a nuclear attack,” the PSA begins. “Don’t ask me how or why. Just know the big one has hit. OK. So what do we do?’

In the event of a nuclear incident, the PSA recommends the following actions:

  • Get inside: Get indoors and away from windows.
  • Stay inside: Close all doors and windows and move to the basement if you have one.
  • Stay tuned and stay put: Follow the media for the latest details and watch for alerts from officials when it’s safe to go outside.

“If you were outside after the blast, clean up immediately. Remove and pack all outer clothing to keep radioactive dust or ash off your body,” the PSA advises.

New Yorkers are encouraged to sign up for Notify NYC, the city’s official emergency communications program, and receive free emergency alerts by visiting NYC.gov/notifynyc or by calling 311.

“As the threat landscape continues to evolve, it’s important that New Yorkers know that we are preparing for any imminent threats and providing them with the resources they need to stay safe and informed,” said Emergency Management Commissioner Zach School.
