The CFL suspended Marino for a total of four games

TORONTO — The Canadian Football League (CFL) has handed out three separate four-game suspensions to Saskatchewan Roughrider linebacker Garrett Marino for his conduct during his team’s game with the Ottawa REDBLACKS last Friday night.

It is the most severe general league discipline ever imposed for in-game conduct during a single game.

The three separate suspensions that must be performed in sequence are as follows:

  • A two-game suspension for Marino’s dangerous and reckless low hit on Ottawa quarterback Jeremiah Masoli on play #123, which resulted in Marino being seriously injured and ejected from the game, and for Marino’s subsequent celebration;
  • One-game suspension for verbal comments made by Marino regarding Masoli’s legacy during the game in apparent violation of our Code of Conduct.
  • A one-game suspension for Marino’s illegal and reckless tackle on an Ottawa offensive lineman in a previous game.

The league also cited Marino’s disciplinary record after 12 games in his CFL career, which includes a previous ejection and two fines for his play.

“This behavior has no place in our league,” said Randy Ambrosi, CFL commissioner. “This discipline is intended to send a strong message that it will not be tolerated.”
