The City of Surrey is moving pickleball to a new location in Crescent Park after receiving numerous complaints from angry residents.
Two years ago, many of the area’s tennis courts were converted for pickleball, and neighbors said they immediately noticed a sharp increase in noise.
“They’re a lot louder than the tennis players,” said South Surrey resident Joan Spruce, who described hearing constant banging, banging and swearing.
The game is a combination of other racquet sports and players use hard paddles to hit a polymer ball.
“They have tournaments and 24 people are in them,” Spruce said. “The person who lives in the corner apartment is going crazy with the noise.”
She has been lobbying the city to move the pickleball courts for two years.
Players enjoying Monday’s game admitted to CTV News that pickleball is a noisy sport and they weren’t surprised by the neighbors’ complaints.
In a statement, city staff confirmed to CTV News that they have reduced the hours people can play. Teams are also building new courts in a different area of the park.
“These new courts are expected to be completed this summer, at which time pickleball will be moved to the new courts,” the statement said.
