After another year of enough television to fill ten awards shows, the members of the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences have made their picks for the crème de la crème. Emmy nominations are coming up, and they’re sure to spark conversations about who’s been overlooked and who’s the bait of awards season. Eligible from June 1, 2021 to May 31, 2022, Loud Shows — The White Lotus, Squid Game, Barry, Succession, Pachinko, Abbott Elementary, Hacks, Ted Lasso, Russian Doll, Only Murders in the Building, Yellowjackets and a slew of limited series (we’ll spare you another list; there really is so much TV) — all were eligible, but only a handful were recognized.
The live virtual ceremony was hosted by Emmy Award-winning actors JB Smoove (Curb Your Enthusiasm) and Melissa Fumero (Brooklyn Nine-Nine), along with Television Academy Chairman and CEO Frank Scherma. Succession leads the list with 25 nominations, followed by Ted Lasso and The White Lotus with 20 nominations each. Comedy series Hacks and Only Murders in the Building are also among the top nominees with 17 each. Meme legend scene stealer Sidney Sweeney was recognized in the acting categories for his roles in Euphoria and The White Lotus, while the actors of Squid Game , including Lee Jung-jae and Jung Ho-yeon, earned their first nominations. Abbott Elementary earns well-deserved honors for star-creator Quinta Brunson & Co.: co-stars Janelle James and Sheryl Lee Ralph compete against each other in the supporting actress category.
