Two people were killed and several others injured after a charter boat capsized in the Hudson River, officials said. Two others are in critical condition and a third person is in critical but stable condition, according to New York Fire Department Interim Commissioner Laura Cavanagh.
The two people killed were not immediately identified, but were described as a 50-year-old woman and a 7-year-old man.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams said “our hearts go out to a group of people who just used the water in our city… This is a devastating time for them and those who are part of the families that were there.”
The incident occurred around 2:46 p.m. when the FDNY and NYPD responded to a report of a drowning. Two people were pulled from the water by FDNY and NYPD officers. One person was taken to Roosevelt Hospital in critical condition and another was taken to Lenox Hill Hospital in critical condition, the FDNY said.
One of the people in critical condition is the boat’s captain, NYPD officials said at a news conference Tuesday.

Eight others suffered minor injuries, Kavanagh said.
New York Waterways, a private company that operates ferries between New York and New Jersey, assisted in the rescue, according to a company statement.
“Two NY Waterway ferries, the Garden State and John Stevens, arrived on scene and their crews rescued 9 passengers from the private boat,” the company said.

A Coast Guard official told CBS New York it was unclear what caused the boat to capsize, but said there was a small craft warning, meaning the waves were high at the time of the incident. The US Coast Guard also responded to the incident.
The boat launched from Weehawken, New Jersey, directly across the river from downtown Manhattan, reports CBS New York.
New York Police Assistant Chief James McCarthy said Tuesday that the boat had been rented by family and friends and that the owner followed it on a jet. McCarthy said the investigation is still in its early stages and it is unclear whether the boat was overloaded or what other conditions may have caused it to capsize.
As of Tuesday evening, the boat had been towed further from the city center where officials were working to turn it upright.
