Buck Moon: The biggest and brightest supermoon of the year will rise this week

A supermoon will shine bright this week.

According to NASA, the moon will appear full from early Tuesday morning through early Friday morning.

However, local weather conditions will ultimately determine how much of it will be visible. Environment Canada is predicting mostly clear overnight skies for British Columbia and a mix of clear skies and clouds for the prairies. From Ontario to the Atlantic, the forecast calls for either some clouds or rain and cloudy periods.

A supermoon occurs when the moon is full and its orbit is also close to Earth.

Although the Moon’s orbit around the Earth may appear circular, it is not. It is elliptical and the closest point to Earth is called perigee, a distance of about 363,300 km.

When the moon is at or near its perigee, it will appear larger and brighter than normal. For what it’s worth, the farthest point, or apogee, is about 405,000 km.

Several astronomy websites claim it will be the brightest supermoon of the year, coming 357,418 km from Earth.

Since it’s July, the month’s full moon also has several names, including Buck Moon, Thunder Moon, Hay Moon, and Salmon Moon.

If you’re planning to take pictures of this week’s supermoon, Greg Reilly of Osoyoos, British Columbia, has tips on how to take memorable photos.

“If you don’t own a DSLR or camera, something with a body and manual settings, and you’re using a phone, I suggest using a tripod if you can,” says Reilly, whose passion for photography has turned into a small business.

“And if you want to create a memorable photo, find something in the foreground that interests you, whether it’s a mountain range, a sculpture or a person. It will make for a much more interesting picture.”

Reilly says that “if you have a long lens, you can focus on a mountain range or some structure and as the moon rises, capture that. Not when it’s fully raised, but just when it’s coming over the hill or behind a building or past a bridge or something.
