Older Victoria bus passengers are living up to the Canadian stereotype of being polite, as shown in a viral TikTok video that quickly surpassed six million views.
On board a BC Transit bus, American TikToker Corinne Carlson’s video posted this week captured back-to-back customers thanking the bus driver as they headed for the exit doors.
On TikTok, Carlson goes by @TheFatPassport and captioned the video “Canada is too healthy,” prompting an outpouring of online reactions, including more than 745,000 “likes” and 26,000 comments by Tuesday morning.
“I’ve had some other popular ones, but not as big. It was very exciting to see,” Carlson said in an interview with CHEK News.
“It’s always such a surprise when a video comes out. I didn’t expect this kind of reaction to the video at all, I just thought it was really cute and a few people would laugh.”

BK Transit republished the video on its social networks.
According to spokesperson Jamie Weiss, the relationship between the company’s customers and its drivers is important – a simple “thank you” goes a long way.
“We realize this doesn’t necessarily happen everywhere, but BC Transit wants to thank all of our customers who support this important tradition,” Weiss told CHEK News.
But around Victoria the buses can be polite too.
Another viral TikTok posted by Corrin just the day before showed a BC Transit bus parked on Fairfield Road with the words “Sorry…out of service” on its front screen.
“Canada is the only country I’ve been to where the buses apologize for not running,” Corinne said in the video as O Canada played in the background.
Some of the nearly 500 commenters on the video suggest that buses in countries such as the UK, Japan and the Netherlands are following suit and displaying “Sorry” when passengers are turned away.
“My town in Canada doesn’t say sorry — it has to!” said one commenter. “This is very… Canada. I love and miss him…” added another.

After a tour of Victoria, Carlson returned to the US, but she is already eager to get back.
“It’s a beautiful place,” she added. “I’m happy to be back, of course.”
