A new tranche of census data shows that Canadians are increasingly likely to live in domestic partnerships rather than officially marry.
Statistics Canada today released results from the 2021 national census that show 23 percent of cohabiting couples are not married.
The agency says that over the past 40 years, the number of married couples has increased by 447 percent.
During the same period, the number of married couples increased by only 26 percent.
Statistics Canada says this country now has the highest proportion of civil unions in the G7.
It says this is partly due to the union’s popularity in Quebec, where 43 percent of Canada’s civil couples live.
