The Edmonton Oilers have signed goaltender Calvin Pickard to be the organization’s third-string goaltender.
The news was first reported by Frank Serravalli of the Daily Faceoff.

According to the Oilers, he will earn an AAV of $762,500 on a two-year deal.
Pickard, 30, was selected by the Colorado Avalanche in the 2nd round of the 2010 draft and bounced between several teams. Throughout his career, he split his time between the NHL and AHL.
He has played in the Detroit Red Wings organization since 2019-20, again splitting time. This past season, he appeared in 43 games with the Grand Rapids Griffins of the AHL, posting a 21-16-6 record, a .918 save percentage and a 2.58 GAA.
I’m a big fan of this deal as an insurance move. He is a high-quality minor league player who can fill the backup role in the NHL in a pinch.

The Oilers were expected to deal with some organizational goal, so this makes a lot of sense. A good, veteran goaltender will help out Olivier Rodrigue in Bakersfield next year with Stuart Skinner going to the Edmonton Oilers.
