Suella Braverman backs Liz Truss for Tory leader

Earlier on Thursday, Ms Braverman criticized Penny Mordaunt, the bookies’ favorite to succeed Boris Johnson, over her record in government.

The Attorney General repeated allegations that the then head of state opposed the inclusion of the words “mother” and “wife” in a bill designed to ensure Ms Braverman and future ministers did not have to resign as a cabinet minister or return to work immediately after childbirth.

She previously said it made her pregnancy “unnecessarily” stressful.

Meanwhile, leadership contender Mr Tugendhat has offered to abandon the Channel 4 privatization policy if he becomes prime minister.

He told LBC radio: “I don’t think it’s a good idea – there are a lot of other priorities,” and also said he would not scrap the BBC’s license fee.

Robert Buckland, the Welsh Secretary, came out in support of Rishi Sunak as the next Tory leader on Thursday night.

Mr Buckland told TalkTV: “I have decided that in light of the particular challenges it faces – the economic challenges – that the best person to lead this country is Rishi Sunak.”

In Thursday’s vote, Mr Sunak collected 101 votes, Ms Mordaunt 83, Ms Truss 64, Ms Badenoch 49 and Tom Tugendhat 32.
