Ottawa police are searching for a suspect in a downtown stabbing that happened near the Fairmont Château Laurier hotel around 10 a.m. Thursday.

The male suspect is considered “armed and dangerous,” according to a police statement released Thursday afternoon.

Police say the stabbing happened when the male victim tried to separate a man and woman who were having an “altercation” in the area of ​​Rideau Street and McKenzie Avenue.

The suspect stabbed the man, who was taken to the hospital in serious but stable condition.

Paramedics said the victim was taken to an Ottawa hospital trauma unit.

The intersection of Rideau and Mackenzie was closed and several OC Transpo routes were detoured until about 12:45 p.m.
