The RCMP cannot point to a single factor behind the huge increase in the number of fatal crashes and the number of deaths on our roads and off-road during the three-month period of April, May and June this year compared to last year.
Sixteen people have died in car and off-road vehicle collisions in the RCMP’s jurisdiction this time this year, more than triple the number of people killed a year earlier, when five people lost their lives in similar ways.
Impairment is a factor, as are aggressive and distracted driving and failure to wear a seat belt and use a helmet.
Lance Corporal Jolene Garland says there is no specific area in the province that can claim the “most dangerous” title.
They can’t put it down to a certain time of day, a certain road in the countryside, a certain age or gender of the driver, says Cpl. garland. No matter where you drive, always wear your seat belt and follow the rules,” she adds.
