The arrest of a suspect on outstanding warrants led to a manhunt in Sarnia on Thursday.
Members of the Ontario Recidivist Apprehension Squad (ROPE Squad) visited Sarnia to locate a suspect wanted in several jurisdictions, including Sarnia.
Officers located the defendant as he was about to get into a taxi in the 800 block of Devine Street.
Sarnia police Cst. John Sotosanti said when officers approached the taxi, the suspect fled on foot, leading to a pursuit. He said officers observed the suspect trying to access a concealed weapon on his person and a violent struggle ensued.
“Officers were able to complete the arrest of the suspect and secure the scene,” Sotosanti said. “Officers recovered a loaded .357 magnum revolver, which is a prohibited firearm.”
St. John Sotosanti said Abbas Kamal Zeidan, 42, of Windsor, faces 18 new criminal charges.
“These charges include everything from possession of a firearm or ammunition in violation of a restraining order, failure to comply with a release order, resisting arrest, assaulting a peace officer, assaulting a peace officer with a weapon, using a weapon in the commission of a crime along with other gun possession charges,” Sotosanti said. “He was remanded in custody pending a bail hearing.”
