Latest Conservative leadership race: Rishi Sunak vows to ‘make Brexit sing’ as Tom Tugendhat tops poll

R

Ishi Sunak vowed to “make Brexit sound” after the first televised debate.

The former chancellor, who voted to leave in 2016, said there was more to do to maximize the UK’s exit from the EU. Writing in The Sun, he said: “We’ve done Brexit, now I’m going to make Brexit sing.”

After the first televised debate, however, Tom Tugendhat received increasing support from voters, a survey by Opinium Research showed.

Of the 1,000 people asked, 36 per cent thought Mr Tugendhat had performed best, followed by Mr Sunak on 25 per cent, Penny Mordaunt, 12, Kemi Badenoch, also 12, and Liz Truss on just six per cent.

During the debate, Ms Truss joined Ms Badenoch in accusing the trade secretary of pursuing a gender identity policy when she is in charge of equalities – something she strongly denied.

Ms Mordaunt, a former women and equalities minister, said that while she was consulting on the Gender Recognition Act she had “never been in favor of self-identification”, while Tugendhat drew the first cheers from the Channel 4 studio audience when he was the only candidate to say no when asked if Boris Johnson was an honest man.

A second debate will be hosted by ITV at 7pm on Sunday.

Tom Tugendhat says he is committed to delivering on Brexit

Tory leadership candidate Tom Tugendhat said he was committed to Brexit and a solution to the Northern Ireland Protocol.

Mr Tugendhat, who was a strong supporter of the Remain referendum in 2016, told GB News: “One of the other things I will make sure is delivered is Brexit.

“What Boris Johnson has done is achieve most of Brexit, let’s be honest, there’s still Northern Ireland and that’s a really big problem. Let’s not kid ourselves that it’s going to be easy, because it’s not.”

Although he saw his vote count drop in the second parliamentary vote in which he finished fifth, the former army officer said he had no intention of dropping out.

“I have never turned down a challenge because the odds were against me. I’m not going to start now,” he said.

Tees Valley mayor backs Rishi as he pledges to ‘raise the bar’

Tees Valley’s Conservative mayor said he was backing Rishi Sunak to become the next prime minister because of his commitment to equality.

Speaking during a joint visit to Teesside Freeport, Ben Houchen said: “What is really important is that in this leadership contest we need to make sure that whoever wins is committed to the equalization agenda.

“Boris Johnson has done a fantastic job in launching it and we can’t afford it to be abandoned, and with Rishi engaging directly with me on this issue and fully committing to the level-up promise I made to the challengers for leadership, given what he’s done locally as well, I think he’s the right person for the job.”

Sunak’s Tory leadership chances continue to dwindle after televised debate

Rishi Sunak’s Tory leadership chances continue to decline, according to the Betfair Exchange.

After Friday’s Channel 4 debate, the former chancellor’s odds rose to 7/4 from 11/4.

Penny Murdonth remains the favorite to become the next Conservative leader with her 10/11 odds to take over from Boris Johnson, having previously been 6/5.

Liz Truss, who was ahead of Sunak in second before the debate, has drifted to 5/1

Tom Tugenhadt’s bid to change the odds continues to gain momentum as the ranked outsider moves to 33/1 from 119/1 in the last 24 hours.

Rishi Sunak: We need to reduce inflation

Speaking on a visit to Teesside, where he secured the support of regional mayor Ben Houchen, Mr Sunak rejected accusations he had been a “socialist chancellor”.

“I think the number one economic priority we face as a country is inflation. I want to tackle inflation because inflation is what makes everybody poorer,” he said.

“If we don’t get it under control now, it’s going to last longer and that’s not good. Once we do that, I will provide tax cuts.

Mr Sunak said he believed he would be the best leader to take on Labor at the next general election.

“I will continue to stand for my candidacy and I believe I am the best possible person to help our party defeat Keir Starmer and the Labor Party at a general election,” he said.

Tory leadership contender Rishi Sunak has again insisted that inflation must be brought under control before the government can consider tax cuts.
