It’s no secret that Marvel movies have a lot of moving parts behind the scenes that ultimately translate a concept from the page to the big screen. And in the latest installment of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Thor: Love and Thunder, director Taika Waititi works balancing a fun comedic tone with some heavier themes (He even throws in some weirder elements like the heroic and viral space goats and Russell Crowe’s Ridiculous Zeus.) In the midst of all this, however, Waititi apparently used the wrong idea involving Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie in the final film, as the actress herself pointed out.
Taika Waititi and Tessa Thompson recently teamed up for Vanity Fair A Scene Notes series where directors and actors dive deep into a particular scene in a film and explain the finer elements of it. Check out the moment the Valkyrie actress shows her director a moment that might have worked best as a gaffe:
Now I’ll be honest, I didn’t notice this little bug when I caught the fun, feel-good movie that it is Thor: Love and Thunder, but Tessa Thompson sure did. As she revealed to Taika Waititi, he left a performance shot of her reacting to Chris Hemsworth’s Thor waking up from The Shared Vision with the Asgardian children. In the brief moment, Valkyrie looks like she’s reacting in surprise to something for no reason.
The New Zealand-born director laughed sheepishly at the revelation, admitting he never noticed it. Tessa Thompson also laughed, saying she didn’t “mind” and thought it was “kind of funny”. While she said it “doesn’t make any sense, she ‘loves it.’ Also in Thompson’s words:
This performance made sense because he would wake up. He will say “Ah!” and then that was my reaction. But now I just do it for no reason, which is great, and it’s also an indication of how sometimes someone can make a performance look crazy when it’s not.
To be perfectly honest, this little editing slip is pretty funny overall. Next time you catch Thor: Love and Thunder, you can see the short and, if you go with friends or family, see if they can spot it. It’s true that filmmakers definitely want to shoot for a clean and cohesive edit with their films, but little things like this can happen every now and then. Although I’m sure the Creed actress will be humorously lashing out at her director for this little flaw for the foreseeable future.
Thor: Love and Thunder is absolutely slaying at the box office after Chris Hemsworth’s latest hit became the No. 1 box office in its debut last weekend. The film has already amassed $415 million worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo, and is projected to top the weekend again when Where The Crawdads Sing and Paws of Fury hit theaters. You can check out CinemaBlend’s interview with the cast of Love and Thunder while you’re on the subject. And do yourself a favor and check out the movie, along with the little editing glitch.
