London has been declared a major incident after a ‘huge increase’ in fires amid record temperatures | UK news

A major incident has been declared in London after a “huge spike” in fires in the capital amid record high temperatures.

Mayor Sadiq Khan said the London Fire Brigade (LFB) was “under enormous pressure” as he urged people to be safe, adding: “This is critical.”

It comes after several houses were badly damaged after fires broke out in a village on the outskirts of east London.

The LFB sent 15 fire engines and around 100 firefighters to Wennington to tackle the blaze, which appeared to have engulfed a number of buildings and neighboring lawns.

At least one house was completely destroyed.

Aerial footage shows smoke covering the village.

It can be seen that the nearby fields are completely burnt and burning intensely.

London Fire Brigade tweeted: “We have 15 fire engines and around 100 firefighters tackling this fire on The Green in Wennington.”

The houses were burning near a fire station in the village.

It comes on the UK’s hottest day of the year, with temperatures reaching 40.2C (104.3F) at Heathrow Airport.

Wennington is a small village with a population of about 300 people.
