Samsung’s next big product launch event is officially on August 10. After an earlier leak by Evan Blass aka Evleaks nailed down that date, Samsung’s Twitter account more or less confirmed the report with a puzzle with “081022” as the answer. Galaxy Z Fold 4, Galaxy Z Flip 4, Galaxy Watch 5 and Buds2 Pro headphones are expected at the show. Samsung has a great time because more leaks came out today. Blass and 91Mobiles have released official renders of both the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Z Flip 4.

The external design of the two devices hasn’t changed much, but we are rumored to expect a lot of changes in the dimensions and internals. Leaker Ice universe claims that the Galaxy Fold is again expected to become slightly shorter and wider. The Fold 3’s external screen is very short and thin, which can lead to layout issues, a general cramped feel, and a small keyboard. Shortening and widening with the Z Fold 4 will bring the front screen closer to the phone’s normal aspect ratio. On the inside, the shorter and wider should help with media and split-screen content, where the split will be closer to two normal smartphones side-by-side.

If you want to see the Z Fold 4 from more angles, these unofficial renders from Onleaks and Smartprix are your best bet. There are conflicting reports regarding the thickness of the device. The Onleaks render has the Z Fold 4 measuring in at 155×130×7.1mm. It’s shorter, wider and thicker than the 158.2 × 128.1 × 6.4 mm Fold 3. Meanwhile, Ice Universe continues to say that the Fold 4 is “thinner” than the Fold 3, as while supporting a 4,400 mAh battery (same as the Fold 3).

We’re not usually one to complain about phone thickness – more battery and less camera bump is usually a good thing, but thickness is a tough issue for foldable phones. Those dimensions are the phone when it’s open, so folded, you double that thickness for at least a 14.2mm thick device. Samsung’s hinges don’t fold flat, so with the 6.4mm-thick Fold 3, you’re actually looking at a 16mm wedge when folded. If you’re trying to fit it in a pocket, it’s going to be a lot to carry around.

Most reports contain some vague whisper of Samsung redesigning the hinges to either lighten the phone’s weight or try to reduce display creases. However, I haven’t seen any specific explanations of what Samsung is doing. Specs should be the usual flagship fare, with the Snapdragon 8 Gen1 SoC coming to all countries. We’ll know a lot more about what’s going on inside this phone in just a few weeks.
