Part of Strathcona Park in East Vancouver is closed to the public and under repair due to a pothole.
The Vancouver Park Board says the sinkhole first appeared on July 6 and was caused by aging infrastructure after a drainage pipe collapsed.
“It’s a drain pipe that collapsed on its own and so the engineers did some temporary repairs,” said Amit Ganda, director of parks for the Vancouver Parks and Recreation Board.
She said the hole was approximately 1.2 meters in diameter and the hole was filled in as a temporary solution.
The area remains fenced and affects the tennis courts, nearby paths and gardens.
“We’ve temporarily relocated … some components of the garden, part of the trail has been closed and the tennis courts there have also been temporarily closed,” Ganda said.
Due to a hole caused by the aging infrastructure, part of Strathcona Park – including the tennis courts – is closed. While the temporary fix is complete, we are investigating a more permanent solution.

Meanwhile, officials are looking for a more permanent solution.
Ganda said it could take about two months to find a long-term solution to the sinkhole, but that could change depending on the type of repairs needed.
Until then, park visitors are encouraged to use the tennis courts at Andy Livingstone Park.
