The next court appearance will be on August 31 in the Supreme Court
Montana Lewis was on trial for first-degree murder in the 2020 stabbing death of another young man from Sault Ste. Marie man.
Ontario Court Justice Melanie Dunn made the ruling Wednesday, two months after the 19-year-old’s preliminary hearing in June.
Lewis is charged in connection with the Nov. 12, 2020, killing of Samuel Graham, also 19.
About 30 people, family members and friends of the victim and the accused, attended the large second-floor courtroom to hear the judge’s decision on whether the Crown had enough evidence for Lewis to stand trial.
Lewis sat hunched over in the prison box during the half hour it took Dunne to read her decision.
His next appearance will be on August 31 in the Supreme Court, where the process of setting a trial date will begin.
The stabbing happened on Muriel Drive.
Dunn imposed a publication ban on the evidence heard during the investigation at the start of the preliminary hearing.
At the time of the incident, the Sault Ste. Marie Police Department said officers responded to reports of an altercation on the city’s east end at 4:35 p.m.
They located the victim, who was transported to Sault County Hospital and later died as a result of his injuries.
Assistant Crown attorneys Heidi Mitchell and Matthew Caputo are prosecuting the case.
Defense attorney Bruce Wilson represented the accused.
