European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen described what she saw during her visit to the Ukrainian city of Bucha as “horror” and reiterated her “admiration” for Ukrainians fighting the Russian invasion.
“There are no words about the horror I saw in Bucha, the ugly face of Putin’s army terrorizing people,” von der Leyen said at a global Stand Up For Ukraine event in the Polish capital, Warsaw, on Saturday. “I have so much admiration for our brave Ukrainian friends who are fighting against this. They are waging our war. “
“They are in our battle because not only is Ukraine fighting for its sovereignty and integrity, but it is also fighting over whether humanity will prevail or whether the result will be disgusting devastation,” von der Leyen said.
She traveled to Kyiv on Friday with EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and other Ukrainian officials.
Zelensky and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also spoke at the Stand Up For Ukraine event.
Zelenski praised the courage of his compatriots and reiterated his call for additional military and financial assistance.
“Russia’s leadership has failed to take into account one fact. The fact that it is attacking the world’s second largest country, Ukraine, the greatest in its courage. We are not afraid of massive missile strikes, Russian planes and endless tank columns,” he said. .
“We are here today to respond to President Zelensky’s call on the international community to mobilize in support of Ukrainian refugees and all Ukrainians,” Trudeau said.
