The multimillion-dollar defamation lawsuit against Johnny Depp against his ex-wife Amber Heard continues in Virginia with the cross-examination of the actor’s sister, who also acted in part as his business manager.

He claims that a 2018 article written by Hurd in The Washington Post – in which she talks about domestic violence against women – suggests that Depp, her ex-husband, is a rapist.

Although the 35-year-old did not name the actor, Depp’s lawyers say Hurd’s allegations made it difficult for the 58-year-old to get roles he had previously played.

Depp is known for his roles in films such as Pirates of the Caribbean, Sweeney Todd and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Hurd appears in titles including Aquaman and Drive Angry.

He is seeking $ 50 million (£ 38.2 million) in damages during a trial in Fairfax County Court. Hurd, meanwhile, has filed a defamation lawsuit against Depp, whom she divorced in 2017, for annoyance.

Earlier, Depp lost a defamation lawsuit in the United Kingdom against the British newspaper The Sun over allegations in Hurd’s 2018 article.

New witness: Isaac Baruch

Isaac Baruch takes the position. He explains that he grew up with Depp when they were teenagers in Florida, before the ambitious actor moved to California and Mr. Baruch moved to New York.

He later also moved to California, where he eventually reconnected with Depp in the mid-1980s, and they made mutual friends and played in groups.

Until 1993, Mr. Baruch became an employee of Depp at The Viper Room nightclub in Los Angeles. He worked there until 199, before moving away.

He then returned to LA in 2002 and returned to work at the club while teaching art.

Depp then became interested in the art he created and offered to be his patron. In March 2013, Depp moved Mr. Baruch to the East Columbia Building, an attic in downtown Los Angeles where the actor owned five penthouses.

Ms. Dembrowski’s cross-examination ends with another exchange of text messages between her and Hurd, in which she is told that her brother is “bending over” and she asks where the children are.

Two days later, Ms. Dembrowski sent a message to Depp: “Stop alcohol, stop pills, stop drugs.”

After a brief diversion from Depp’s lawyer, she apologized.

Dembrowski asked about Depp’s delay for the set

Ms. Dembrowski was asked if she had reason to believe that Depp had drug problems and anger. She says she does not share Amber’s concerns about Depp’s behavior, which affects his career or marriage.

He shows her a 2014 email about his problems from Dr. David Cyprus, a medical professional who helps Depp with addiction. He wrote that Depp believes he will not be able to overcome his addiction or take responsibility for his actions and that he has a problem with anger.

Ms. Dembrowski was also shown a chain of text messages between her and Hurd from the same year she wrote: “I love him so much and he needs help.”

Asked why she turned to Hurd on that date and what she meant by “he needs help,” Ms. Dembrowski reiterated that she was concerned about her brother’s use of a prescription painkiller.

She was later asked if she knew personally about Depp’s delay for the set or any concerns she might have about his delay. Emails between her and Agent Tracy Jacobs show her evidence that he was late for the Pirates of the Caribbean 5 set.

The lawyer says Depp is “destroying” Amber Heard

ICYMI: Amber Heard’s lawyer claims that Johnny Depp will try to turn the defamation case against his ex-wife into a “soap opera”, but warned that it is a distraction.

Ben Rothenborn, Ms. Hurd’s attorney, said the case concerned Ms. Hurd’s rights under the First Amendment to discuss her experience, and argued that context mattered, and asked the jury to read Ms. Hurd’s entire article. which she wrote for The Washington Post – the article that led to the lawsuit – and not just the parts highlighted by Mr. Depp.

He then read the jury’s article and asked why Mr. Depp was not suing The Washington Post, as well as Ms. Hurd, saying he wanted to “ruin her life, destroy her.”

Johnny Depp’s sister says she knew the actor was “drinking” and using “pain medications”

ICYMI: Then Christy Dembrowski was asked if she ever came to “your own conclusion that your brother had a drug and alcohol problem?”

“I knew my brother was drinking,” she said. “But in terms of drugs, to be honest, there was only one drug that I knew was a problem for him. “I don’t remember the name, it was a prescription pain medication that he had been taking for a long time,” she said.

Mr Rotherborn said at the time that February 2014 was not the first time she had been in contact with Hurd over Depp’s drug and alcohol use.

“Did you know that Mr. Depp’s drug and alcohol problem is affecting his relationship with Mrs. Hurd?” He asked.

“I knew she would say he had a drug and alcohol problem with him,” she said. “I knew she would write to me about them, I knew she would try to talk about them and say they had a negative impact, I don’t know that’s the whole situation they had, to be honest,” she said.

The lawyer asked her if she “never believed” Hurd’s allegations about Depp.

“I believe she has exaggerated a lot,” she said.

Hurd’s lawyer then asked about a text message she sent to Hurd in March 2013, in which she said she was “sad” about what they were “going through.”

Ms. Dembrowski explained that in the message she was trying to give advice on how to talk to her brother,

Amber, she could be very, very vocal and what I was trying to do if they were having a conversation that wasn’t going well, maybe if you were having a conversation when you were very strong, it’s a confrontation and they should have an easy conversation. ,” she said.

Her message was: “Disagreement, reasoning, incitement may seem like confrontations, I’m not sure about the volume or when it is possible for some to disappear?”

Hurd’s lawyer asked if she was talking about “erasing” drugs and alcohol.

“I don’t know,” she said. “I mean the volume of the voices. There was a way to learn to talk to Amber to try to keep things calm. You would calm her down, just agree with all her conversations, whatever, we would calm her down all the time to keep things calm, that’s what we did.

“Did you tell Mrs. Hurd not to have any concerns about her significant other’s drug concerns?” Mr. Rothenborn asked.

“No, she was much more confrontational, always confrontational, and I was trying to say that all these things could be confrontational and reduce it.
