The shooting killed at least 23 people, including 10 who were injured in the shooting. At least four people were still in hospitals recovering Wednesday morning, according to Mayor Eric Adams.
Several of the victims were initially listed as seriously injured, but none of the injuries were considered life-threatening. In addition to bullet wounds, injuries are the result of falls, smoke inhalation and panic attacks.
On Wednesday, two firearms victims were hospitalized at the Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn, both in good condition, according to a hospital spokesman.
Police have not yet announced the names of the victims. Here’s what we know so far.
Several of the victims are children and teenagers.
During a visit to Maimonides Medical Center on Tuesday night, Gov. Katie Hochul said she met an 18-year-old victim who was on her way to school at Manhattan Municipal College when the shooting took place. He was waiting for surgery from a bullet or shrapnel wound, Ms Hochul said.
“He seems to be doing well and in a very good mood, as are his mother and grandmother, who are also there,” she said.
The hospital is treating three other young people aged 12, 13 and 16, the governor said.
She described a “challenging meeting” with the mother of the 16-year-old, who underwent surgery to restore the use of his thumb and is expected to be discharged on Wednesday.
“His mother does not speak English, she is Chinese, she is alone there. And it was so sad to hear her talk about her anxiety through an interpreter, “said Ms. Hochul, adding that the woman had just lost her job as a home care assistant.
“All she has is her son and it’s just the two of them,” she added. “So I had a long hug with her and told her we were sending love to all New Yorkers.
10 were injured in the shooting.
Hurari Benkada, 27, said he was sitting next to the suspect in train N during the attack. When the shooting started, Mr Benkada told CNN, he was trying to help a pregnant woman as people rushed through a subway car trying to get away from the shooter.
As he helped her through the car, a bullet passed through the back of his knee.
Mr Benkada was still in hospital on Tuesday night, recovering from surgery. Doctors told him he would be able to walk on crutches in a few weeks.
“I am in serious pain,” Mr Benkada said in a text message to a New York Times reporter on Tuesday. “And I was sitting closest to the shooter – the closest to him was me.”
Mr Bencada, speaking from his hospital bed on Wednesday morning to CNN, said he could never ride the train again.
“All I remember is all the blood that comes out of me, to be honest,” he said.
Rudy Perez, 20, was on board train N for his construction work in Manhattan when the subway car he was sitting in suddenly began to fill with smoke. He didn’t even feel it, he said when a bullet hit him in the left leg.
“I was scared,” Mr Perez told a New York Times reporter in Spanish on Tuesday. “I just wanted to get out of there. That’s all I wanted. Everyone was in a panic. “
There was a passenger who remembers especially, he said, a young man who was shot in the arm. He looked like he had lost his fingers, Mr Perez said.
Mr Perez had to get off the train from another passenger. At the hospital, doctors told him he should be able to walk again in about a month. Until then, he is not sure how he will be able to work.
“I’m afraid this will happen again,” he said, adding: “I’m worried about everyone else.”
