A deal on the Baltic Sea without nuclear weapons is ruled out if Finland joins NATO, says Russia | News

Russia warned today that it will have to strengthen its defense if Sweden and Finland join NATO, including by deploying nuclear weapons in Eastern Europe.

“We can no longer talk about the status of the Baltic Sea without nuclear energy – the balance must be restored,” said Dmitry Medvedev, deputy chairman of Russia’s Security Council and a close ally of President Putin.

Finland took its first step towards NATO membership yesterday, with Sweden expected to follow suit in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
