As of today, our new Partnership on Migration and Economic Development will mean that anyone who enters the UK illegally – as well as those who have arrived illegally since 1 January – can now be relocated to Rwanda.
This innovative approach – driven by our shared humanitarian impulse and made possible by the freedoms of Brexit – will provide safe and legal asylum routes, while undermining the gang business model, because it means that economic migrants who benefit from the asylum will not be able to stay in the UK until those who are really in need are properly protected, including access to legal services on arrival in Rwanda, and given the opportunity to build a new life in this dynamic country, supported by the funding we provide.
The deal we made is unlimited and Rwanda will have the capacity to resettle tens of thousands of people in the coming years …
We are convinced that our new migration partnership is fully in line with our international legal obligations, but we nevertheless expect this to be challenged in court, and if this country is seen as a soft touch on illegal migration by some of our partners, it is precisely because we have such a huge army of politically motivated lawyers who have worked for years to thwart the removal and thwart the government.
So I know that this system will not work overnight.
