A cabinet minister compared the party scandal to controversy over the Iraq war and Tony Blair’s allegations of weapons of mass destruction.
Simon Hart, Wales’ secretary of state, said there was a difference between “misleading and deliberately misleading” parliament, as he defended Boris Johnson against allegations that he may have misled parliament when he insisted Covid’s rules were not violated at Downing street during the block.
Hart drew a parallel from Mr Blair’s insistence to lawmakers that Saddam Hussein was developing weapons of mass destruction.
“I know this always makes everyone disappointed. There is a difference between deception and deliberate deception.
