Imran Ahmad Khan, an MP expelled from the Conservative Party after being found guilty of sexually assaulting a 15-year-old boy, has announced his resignation, sparking by-elections in Wakefield’s Yorkshire constituency.
Although Khan appealed Monday’s sentence, he said in a statement that the trial would last “many months” and leave his constituents without proper political representation.
“That is why, unfortunately, I have come to the conclusion that it is unacceptable for voters to endure years without an MP who can increase his vote in parliament,” he added.
