A police investigation into a shootout on Highway 405 in the Sepulveda Pass on Thursday morning blocked drivers for hours to get to work, LAX, school and more.
A red Ford Mustang on the side of the highway and objects in the lanes were what police officers were focusing on as they drove around a section of the highway in cars lined up for miles.
At a press conference at 12:40 a.m., hours after the drivers were blocked, CHP officer Jose Barrios provided an update explaining how the shooting unfolded.
The CHP said officers saw a red Mustang on the side of the airbags and saw a man in front of the car. As they approached, they saw the man reach into the car, pull out a gun and shoot. They returned fire and struck the man.
The CHP reportedly shot dead a man at around 2:50 a.m., but the CHP did not reveal any other details. Traffic in the area was difficult. Annette Areola reports on April 14, 2022.
The CHP said no staff were beaten, but the man was taken to hospital. They did not have up-to-date information about his condition.
They also said that no words were exchanged before the shooting and that everything happened very quickly.
Asked why it took so long to release information, the CHP said that because a police officer was involved in the shooting, they did not disclose details until investigators could do their job.
The lanes began to open later in the afternoon at 405 South.
Support in the early hours of the morning was extensive at 405 South on Skirball Center Drive. The backup has been extended to Highway 118.
All lanes were closed, but the north side began to move slowly just before 5 am
Traffic south was diverted to Valley Vista.
Alternative routes
Sepulveda is an alternative route possible, but it is getting busier every minute.
Other possible alternatives are South 170, Laurel Canyon or Coldwater Canyon.
It was not clear when SigAlert would clear. The lanes were still closed at 9 p.m.
Officials at Los Angeles International Airport said the FlyAway bus service, which carries passengers from Van Nice to the airport, was delayed by at least 90 minutes.
