Updated: Two taken to hospital after chemicals leak at York Hotel

Two people were taken to hospital after a chemical leak at a hotel in York.

The alarm was raised by staff at the Novotel in Fuster Way, near Fishergate, shortly at 3:30 p.m.

This provoked a huge emergency reaction. At least eight fire engines, several ambulances and police cars went to the scene.

The hotel was evacuated and the Fewster Way was sealed.

A North Yorkshire police spokesman said:

Sixteen staff members were affected by the leak. An ambulance arrived in Yorkshire and two people were taken to hospital with difficulty breathing, the other 14 are currently being monitored. The leak was identified as chlorine and controlled. The hotel has been evacuated and the North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service is currently carrying out inspections to ensure the building is safe for returning guests and staff.

Some people were spotted with blankets around them, treated by paramedics.

Fishergate traffic is not affected.
