The unidentified Hickman County woman was allegedly picked up by her ex-boyfriend Jonathan Smith, 31, after which the two “got into a physical confrontation,” Lt. Mike Dodo of the county sheriff told The Tennessee.

Smith allegedly threatened to kill her and refused to let her go when she asked, telling her, “if he can’t have her, no one can have her,” according to Dodo.

They arrived at a gas station, and when they entered, the woman put her thumb in her hand with four fingers above it and subtly gestured to the gas station employee, Dodo said.

The hand signal is popular in TikTok and is a signal for help from those who suffer from domestic violence.

The officer took the signal, called the police and tried to slow down as they left. But Smith allegedly realized that law enforcement might be on his way, so he grabbed the victim and left.
