The goalkeeper underwent arthroscopic surgery out of season and was expected to be ready for the start of training camp. But Price entered the NHL / NHLPA player support program before the start of the season, the first in a series of setbacks. Only in the last two weeks he managed to train with his teammates.

Price, who received a standing ovation when he brought Canadiens to skate before the game and again, when he was introduced before the fall of the puck, there was not much work in the first period. The Canadians controlled the game and defeated the visitors 14-8. Two of Price’s rescues rose to the level of chanting “Ca-rey, Ca-rey,” but it was Sorokin who was called in to deal with the more difficult odds.

There was more than the same in the second period, but the blows were even more one-sided, with the Canadians holding 16-4. Fans were so hungry for something to applaud that they burst into chanting “Ca-rey, Ca-rey” when a strike from the islanders went off target.

The Canadiens had the only powerful game in the first period and looked dangerous, making four shots on goal. It was a different story when they had another advantage at the end of the second period and failed to collect a blow.

Michael Pezeta, who returned to the squad after two games as a solid scratch, tried to create a little excitement when he got entangled with Anders Lee with seven seconds to play in the second period. Pezzetta was sent off for cutting and Lee was punished for being rude.

Before the match, there was a two-minute tribute to the great Mike Bossi by the islanders. A Montreal resident died Thursday night after battling lung cancer. He was 65 years old. Bossi was part of four consecutive Stanley Cup victories from 1980 to 1983. He holds the NHL record for the most consecutive seasons with 50 goals, nine.

The Canadians recognized the Patriots of the Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières during the break in the first period. The Patriots won the U Sports men’s hockey championship this month in Wolfville, NS, defeating the Alberta Golden Bears 5-4 in the double overtime. This was UQTR’s fifth national title and the first since 2003.

The Canadians return to the Bell Center on Saturday when they face Alexander Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals (7 p.m., City, SNE, TVA Sports, TSN-690 Radio, 98.5 FM).
