Boris Johnson is spending the weekend in Checkers, his home in Buckinghamshire, where he will consider how to overcome the latest hurdle – becoming the first British prime minister to be punished for breaking the law.
Faced with the prospect of more fines and being found in disrespect to parliament, Johnson will make a statement to the municipality on Tuesday, trying to find a balance between asking for public forgiveness and using the conflict in Ukraine to “make a request for perspective ”.
