Firefighters called for blaze near RAF base as parts of M4 closed

The M4 arts have been closed due to a fire in Newbury near a RAF base, emergency services confirmed.

Firefighters from the Royal Fire and Rescue Service of Berkshire were called to set fire to an industrial building near Westbrook, Newbury just before 2 p.m.

According to the fire service, the fire may have included “pyrotechnics and fireworks.” Due to the fire, the M4 was closed in both directions between junction 13 and 14 on Saturday afternoon.

The Royal Fire and Rescue Service of Berkshire said: “At 1:41 pm on Saturday, April 16, we received reports of a fire in an industrial building in Westbrook, Newbury.

“Two teams from the Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service (RBFRS) in Newbury, a crew from Teale and two officers are currently being sent to the scene, along with teams from the Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service.

“Firefighters have discovered a fire involving possible pyrotechnics and fireworks. Borders have been set, but people have been urged to stay away from the area while emergency services deal with the blaze.

It is unclear what caused the fire and whether there were any casualties.

National Highways East added: “The M4 is closed in both directions between J13 near Snelsmore – J14 near Shefford Woodlands due to a large fire in the building near the roadway, causing debris.
