A man fights for his life after a collision with a parked car in Sunderland

A 20-year-old man is fighting for his life after a serious clash in Sunderland in the early hours of Easter.

At around 12.20 pm, Northumbria police received a collision report between two vehicles on North Bridge Street involving a blue BMW 320 Coupe and a parked car. A male passenger was taken to hospital after receiving serious injuries that were described as life-threatening, while two other passengers in the BMW received minor injuries.

The BMW was moving from the direction of the Tesco supermarket to the Wearmouth Bridge when, for reasons to be determined, it crashed into a parked Renault Clio in front of the Fona Pizza store.

The investigation into the collision continues and the road remains closed on Sunday morning as officers investigate.

Inspector Matt Sykes of the Northumbria Police Motor Patrol said: “This is obviously a serious incident and we are determined to find out what happened just before the collision. Now I ask anyone who has been to this area in the early hours of this morning who have either witnessed the collision itself or believe they have seen a blue BMW traveling nearby to connect.

“Please also check all the footage from the board and get in touch if you see anything interesting that might help our inquiries.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact the police via the “Tell us something” page on their website or by calling 101, quoting diary NP-20220417-0024. Alternatively, you can email 471@northumbria.police.uk.
