House of Representatives minority leader Kevin McCarthy of California suggested on Sunday that Russia would not invade Ukraine if the United States provided weapons to Kyiv earlier.
“It’s going to get louder and rougher, and what really needs to happen is that Ukraine doesn’t want American men and women fighting, all they want is weapons to defend themselves,” he said. McCarthy to the Fox News correspondent in Washington. Mike Emanuel on Fox News Sunday.
“If we had taken these actions earlier, instead of waiting for the Russian invasion, they probably would never have invaded if we had done so earlier,” he added.
He later said sending weapons to Ukraine earlier could save thousands of lives.
“Ukraine longed for the ability to defend itself. “If we moved weapons to Ukraine earlier so that they could defend themselves, it would have saved thousands of lives and probably Putin’s decision not to come in,” McCarthy said, referring to Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The request came in the seventh week of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which began on February 24.
The Biden administration has provided more than $ 3.2 billion in security aid to Ukraine, including $ 2.6 billion since the invasion began.
This assistance includes anti-tank weapons, unmanned drones, small arms, ammunition and defense equipment.

McCarthy also urged the administration on Sunday to reject Poland’s proposal to transfer MiG-29 fighters to a US air base in Germany, which will then go to Ukraine to help its forces fight Russia.
The Pentagon ultimately said the proposal was “unsuccessful.”
“The president denied Ukraine and denied that Poland had provided MiGs to Ukraine to protect itself during the flyover. “It’s all wrong action in the future,” McCarthy said.
