Queues began to pile up on the main roads in Wales as drivers returned home after a long Easter weekend. The RAC estimates that more than 27 million trips will be made during the four-day vacation in what was expected to be the busiest weekend on the roads in years.
There are also warnings that passengers at airports and train stations will have to wait in lines for hours. Engineering work, as well as staff shortages, affected trains last week, as Network Rail carried out 530 engineering projects worth a total of £ 83 million over the weekend.
These include the closure of the main West Coast line between London Euston and Milton Keynes for four days from Good Friday due to upgrades to the existing line and the operation of HS2. Airports have also experienced severe staff shortages, as dozens of British Airways and easyJet flights were canceled over the weekend.
On Easter Monday, 18 April, roads were congested with delays and slow traffic was reported on the Welsh traffic network. There were queues at some pinching points on the M4, while there were delays on other major roads as well.
