April was indeed the worst month for Arsenal, who emerged from the top four favorites in external chances after three defeats by opponents in the middle of the table and key injuries against Thomas Party and Kieran Tierney.
Things are not easier for the team of Mikel Arteta with Chelsea, Manchester United and West Ham, although the time of these matches gives them hope. United look completely demotivated and lack key players, while the trip to West Ham is between the Europa League semi-final matches. Chelsea as a guest is the most difficult of the matches, but the team of Thomas Tuchel came in third with little to play in the league.
However, Chelsea are rightly considered a strong favorite tonight, after reserving their place in another Cup final with a victory over Crystal Palace at Wembley. They were eliminated from the Champions League by Real Madrid, but their dominant performance in the rematch in Spain confirmed Chelsea as one of the strongest teams in Europe.
They have plenty of attacking options that will be envied by their London rivals, such as Romelu Lukaku, Timo Werner, Kai Haverz, Hakim Zieh, Christian Pulisic and Mason Mount. In contrast, Arsenal’s striking options such as Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketia appear out of the ordinary, with the team scoring just two goals from its last 74 goal attempts. Much lies on the shoulders of 20-year-old Bucaio Sacca and Gabriel Martinelli to provide an attacking threat.
Chelsea are the better team, but Arsenal have a curiously decent record in recent league doubles last season and a victory in the FA Cup final in 2020. The only other visit to Arteta at Stamford Bridge as a manager saw them draw with 10 people.
This is Arsenal’s match against their opponent Tottenham and they start the evening three points behind them. Given Spurs’ superior goal difference, even a tie to reduce that difference to two points could be significant by the end of the season. Arsenal and Spurs meet at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on May 12.
